Guidance On Going to School Outside the U.S. from Fox Business News

Fox Business News recently wrote about college students earning their degrees abroad and included top considerations when choosing an international degree program.

For college-bound kids hoping to get a little bit farther away from home than a couple of states over, pursuing a degree in another country could be an option worth exploring.

Rather than studying abroad for only a semester or two, some Americans are choosing to attend school full time overseas. In addition to the more than 260,000 students who study abroad each year for academic credit at a U.S. college or university, more than 40,000 American students enrolled in higher education institutions outside of the U.S. for full degree programs, according to a forthcoming report which will be issued by the Institute of International Education later this summer.

“By choosing an international degree program, not only are you able to earn a degree, you have the opportunity to live and travel abroad as well,” says Ashley Mikal, who is working on her master’s in anthropology at the University of Edinburgh. “In this last year I have met so many incredible people, including my professors and classmates, and I’ve been able to travel around Europe, spending time at museums and historical landmarks that I otherwise would have only read about in books.”

Before students pack their bags and get their passports squared away, experts advise there are some factors that should be considered before crossing the pond to get an education.

New Zealand AustraLearn Participant Gives Personal Account of Christchurch Quake

The Wilmington StarNews caught up with Elizabeth Jungen, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina Wilmington who is studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch through AustraLearn, after last week’s earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, which left disaster in its wake and over 113 dead.

Jungen is doing well and is safe, and was kind enough to share the conditions in the area with the StarNews.

Here are some excerpts from the email Jungen sent to the StarNews’ Jason Gonzales:

“Just before noon I had just taken a shower and was actually still in my towel when the initial earthquake hit. Since I have gotten here all of the kiwis say regularly what a common occurrence little aftershocks are and that they are no big deal. So I just kind of stood there for a moment not realizing that anything big was happening until the shaking just kept going and the books and things on my shelves started flying around at which point I got under my desk.”

One Week Later: New Zealand Universities Regrouping In Christchurch Quake Aftermath

One week following a devastating earthquake near Christchurch, New Zealand, area universities are determining how quickly they can begin lectures.

The University of Canterbury remains closed, and Lincoln University is delaying the start of lectures until March 14 following last week’s quake, which has greatly impacted Christchurch and its Central Business District.

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, a North American study abroad program provider, continues to assist its AustraLearn study abroad program participants at the University of Canterbury in moving to alternative campuses. The company has worked with each affected student to ensure the academic and personal success for his or her semester abroad, if at another New Zealand university. Lincoln University students will remain at the university.

Late last week, Gavin Murdoch, AustraLearn’s resident director in New Zealand, corresponded with each student who intended to study at the University of Canterbury. In addition, AustraLearn staff is reviewing student academic needs, coupled with intended study plans, to make certain the New Zealand institution will suit each student’s scholastic requirements. If a student chooses to transfer to another university in New Zealand, GlobaLinks Learning Abroad will honor the fees paid to the University of Canterbury, plus arrange and pay for transportation to the new program center.

Get Out Your Vote! 2011 Alumni Photo/Video Contest Now Underway

The 2011 Alumni Photo and Video Contest is on!

This year, there are more than 400 photos and videos from AustraLearn, AsiaLearn, EuroLearn and EuroScholars participants. Voting is now underway through Feb. 28, said Melissa Cech, contest organizer and senior coordinator, outreach and student services, for GlobaLinks Learning Abroad.

“These are some of the best entries we’ve ever had,” she said.

The entries are organized into albums on Facebook, where viewers can “Like” their favorite photos and videos. Albums start with “2011 Alumni Photo Contest.” Each album represents one of the categories in which alumni submitted photos.

Voters can “Like” as many photos as they want by using their personal Facebook accounts and going to www.facebook.com/GLAalumni.

Even voters who don’t have a Facebook account can still have their votes counted. Just click on the below links to see the albums and photos:

Michelle Obama’s China Study Abroad Speech Energizes International Education

“When you study abroad, you are actually helping to make America stronger.”

First Lady Michelle Obama’s recent speech at Howard University about the 100,000 Strong China Study Abroad Initiative is invigorating discussion about the importance of study abroad while placing particular focus on the benefits of international education programs in China.

“Companies here in America can do business and compete with companies all over the world,” the First Lady said in speech preceding a panel discussion on studying abroad in China. “And as a consequence, studying abroad isn’t just an important part of a well rounded educational experience. It’s also becoming increasingly important for success in the modern global economy.

“Getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about the skills you bring from the classroom,” she said. “It’s also about the experience you have with the world beyond our borders, with people, languages and cultures that are very different from our own. But let’s be clear. Studying in countries like China is about so much more than just improving your own prospects in the global market.

“The fact is, with every friendship you make and every bond of trust you establish, you are shaping the image of America projected to the rest of the world,” she said. “That is so important. So when you study abroad, you are actually helping to make America stronger.”

Citing the strategic importance of the U.S.-China relationship, in November 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong” initiative, a national effort designed to increase dramatically the number and diversify the composition of American students studying in China. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton officially launched the initiative in May 2010 in Beijing. The Chinese government strongly supports the initiative and has already committed 10,000 “Bridge Scholarships” for American students to study in China.

This initiative seeks to prepare the next generation of American experts on China who will be charged with managing the growing political, economic and cultural ties between the United States and China. The initiative also seeks to develop specific opportunities and funding sources for underrepresented students to study in China.

Universities in Queensland Making Adjustments in Wake of Flood Disaster

As flood waters gripping Queensland, Australia, begin to recede, universities in the region are adjusting their operations and schedules to address the situation going forward.

Currently, AustraLearn’s February study abroad programs in Queensland are expected to carry on as scheduled, said Kathryn Olinger, director of admissions for AustraLearn.

“We will continue to provide updates as we monitor the situation and maintain contact with our partner universities as they prepare for the commencement of the semester,” Olinger said in an email to university advisors and students. AustraLearn’s emergency contact numbers can be found here.

There are many accounts of the disaster and how people are coping, including this excerpt earlier this week from a blog post by Prof. Scott Bowman, who is vice chancellor and president of CQUniversity in Rockhampton, where AustraLearn’s South Pacific Educational Support Centre is located.

“I walked around Mt Archer this morning and took in the views around Rockhampton and the great ‘sea’ of Rockhampton, which wraps around much of the city. I also rescued my plane from the airport on New Year’s day. I have included a picture of what I saw taking off from Rocky airport. …

“These floods, now affecting most of the state, have and will continue to have an impact on our students, staff, stakeholders and communities for months and years to come. In the midst of this, CQUniversity has put some financial measures in place to aid some students in need, and over the next few weeks we’ll be directing research funds into projects directly tied to the Central Queensland Flood and the its social, economic and environmental impacts. I’m very pleased that CQUniversity has been able to provide shelter to hundreds of displaced residents and animals at the CQ Community Sports Centre at Rockhampton and at our facilities at the Ag College in Emerald and am very grateful to our Facilities and Security staff, especially, who have liaised with the Red Cross to ensure enough resources are available to manage the evacuation facilities. …

“Some of our staff are stuck, unable to return to their campuses, but are working from other CQUniversity facilities or at home. Many here in CQ– students and staff – are hampered by the flood waters which have yet to really recede. I know, too, that this is also a worrisome time for many of us as we have families and friends in flood-stricken and flood-prone areas. I want you to know that your continued safety and well-being is my utmost priority. We can put processes and procedures in place to deal with flood-related administrative and academic issues, but we can’t replace people. The weather is unpredictable and no doubt there will be more harsh storms and flooding in the weeks to come.”

The floods have been described as Queensland’s worst natural disaster in history by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. With that in mind, international students planning to study in Queensland this semester may find these resources from the Australian Trade Commission helpful:

CQUniversity’s campuses in regional Queensland are open for business but they do expect some services to be limited or delayed due to flood-related staff shortages or technical outages. The Central Queensland Sport Centre at CQUniversity Rockhampton is a designated evacuation center for flood victims. Further information can be found at http://www.cqu.edu.au/floods. The Vice-Chancellor of CQU, Scott Bowman, has posted about the floods in his blog at http://vc-cquniversity.blogspot.com/2011/01/floods.html.

CQUniversity Brisbane is closed due to flooding. All other campuses, however, are open for regular business.

University of Queensland

Floodwaters have begun to recede at the University of Queensland, which has closed all of its campuses until Jan. 19. UQ believes that the start to the semester will not be impacted and orientation programs will not be disrupted.

UQ’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (International) Anna Ciccarelli is encouraging students to delay their arrival, if possible, by a week. “If you have students who are due to arrive in Brisbane over the next week, we will be providing them with a letter at the information booth giving them an update on the situation,” she said in an email. “Students should contact their accommodation provider to ensure that the accommodation is still available and they have not been affected by floods.”

Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has closed its campuses in Brisbane and expects to re-open on Jan. 17. Power outages have affected some of QUT’s usual communication channels, and as a result, the IT and student call centers are experiencing operational difficulties. Online registration for 2011 classes scheduled to be available for students from next week is now likely to be delayed. Students should monitor the QUT website for further information.

Griffith University

Griffith University has closed its South Bank campus in Brisbane until further notice. Communication services across all campuses are being affected, including both phone and internet services. There is a possibility that Griffith University may lose its internet connection across all campuses. For more updates, please visit the Griffith University website.

University of Southern Queensland

University of Southern Queensland escaped relatively undamaged following a disastrous flash flood that hit Toowoomba and areas of the Darling Downs. The University has resumed normal business activities in Toowoomba, although it’s expected there will be some delays and interruptions to online internet services due to water damage to telecommunications equipment. Further updates can be found on the USQ website.

Flood events have not affected the operations of the University of the Sunshine Coast, Bond University or James Cook University. The local airports are operational, and these campuses are accessible by major roads which are not affected by the flooding.

Interested students who would like to volunteer to help later with the flood clean-up can register online with Volunteering QLD. Donations can also be made to flood relief appeal.

United Nations’ Human Development Report 2010 —20th Anniversary Edition

This 20th anniversary edition of the United Nations’ Human Development Report includes New Zealand, Ireland and Australia in the top five of nations in measuring the critical aspects of human development that dictate quality of life, including political freedoms, empowerment, sustainability and human security.

The past 20 years have seen substantial progress in many aspects of human development. Most people today are healthier, live longer, are more educated and have more access to goods and services, according to a summary of the report. Even in countries facing adverse economic conditions, people’s health and education have greatly improved. And there has been progress not only in improving health and education and raising income, but also in expanding people’s power to select leaders, influence public decisions and share knowledge.

Yet not all sides of the story are positive, the report says. These years have also seen increasing inequality— both within and across countries— as well as production and consumption patterns that have increasingly been revealed as unsustainable. Progress has varied, and people in some regions—such as Southern Africa and the former Soviet Union—have experienced periods of regress, especially in health. New vulnerabilities require innovative public policies to confront risk and inequalities while harnessing dynamic market forces for the benefit of all.

“Twenty years after the appearance of the first Human Development Report, there is much to celebrate in what has been achieved,” says Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize–winning economist who worked with series founder Mahbub ul Haq on the conception of the first Human Development Report and contributed to and inspired many successive volumes.”But we also have to be alive to ways of improving the assessment of old adversities and of recognizing—and responding to—new threats that endanger human well-being and freedom.“

ICMS, Griffith Universities Win Prestigious Premier’s Export Awards

International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) Wins New South Wales Premier’s Export Award

The International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) is the winner of the New South Wales Premier’s Export Award for the Education and Training category.

It is the third time ICMS has won the award, announced last week.

ICMS is a leading business school, educating future leaders in event management, hospitality management, international tourism, strategic property management, retail services management and sport management.

The Premier’s NSW Export Awards is an annual program which aims to recognize excellence in the export of goods and services by NSW businesses. The awards acknowledge the important contribution of businesses to the economy through job creation and increased prosperity for the community and for the state.

Winners of the 2010 Premier’s NSW Export Awards automatically progress as National Finalists in the 48th Australian Export Awards program where the 12 National Award category award winners will be announced in Sydney on Nov. 17.

Griffith University Wins Queensland Premier’s Export Award

The win is an acknowledgment of the excellent opportunities Griffith offered international students, said Griffith’s Acting International Director Ann Hammond in a university news article.

“Griffith seeks to internationalize all students’ educational experiences, inclusive of the curriculum and methods of teaching and, firmly support the social and cultural benefits of the presence of international education and international students,” Hammond said.

Griffith is presently the number one university in Queensland in terms of onshore enrollments and the leading Queensland university of choice in 50 significant international markets, Hammond said.

“Griffith is the national leader in 34 significant overseas markets and is second place nationally in a further 20 international markets,” she said.

In the current year, 8,562 international students made up 22.3 percent of the students on Griffith’s five campuses, representing more than 119 countries of origin.

“Griffith’s international activities bring into Australia in excess of $145 million in direct export income and an additional estimated $200 million in flow-on income,” she said.

“Our ongoing commitment to developing research centers of international significance and building strategic international partnerships will continue to contribute to our export success in the future,” she said.

Griffith was a finalist in the Large Services category of the awards.

Take heed, as Paul’s World Cup picks have yet to be wrong.

Journalists from the world over watched earlier today as Paul, a resident of the Oberhausen Sea Life aquarium, floated down onto a tank marked with a Spanish flag, grabbing and devouring a mussel to solifiy his pick. He ignored the Dutch tank.

Paul has previously correctly called all of Germany’s games, including its wins over Argentia, England, Australia and Ghana, as well as its loss to Spain and Serbia. The final match was the first time the octopus was asked to call a game in which Germany is not playing.

Paul’s fame is growing, according to an Associated Press article. He even has a Facebook page, which 26,369 people “like.”
