Young musicians from all over the world are taking part in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 this month as part of the “Young Expo” series of events.

Students from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Utah State University and Yale University played percussion and jazz music and sang at Exposition Square in the Expo’s Puxi site, according to event news.

More than 2,000 students from institutions including the University of Sydney, Harvard and Yale universities are performing at the square.

The musical styles are wide ranging – from percussion, jazz, rock and folk to classical, dance and choral works. Music from Japan and China’s Peking Opera is also being performed.

Among the groups are a 12-strong harp ensemble from Arizona University and the Oxford University Big Band.

The festival has been co-organized by Shanghai Fudan University. Other students will be from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Australia’s Canon Hill College, Tsinghua University, Beijing University, London’s Imperial College, Hong Kong University, Taiwan University, Macau University and China’s Taibei and Ritan middle schools.

Visitor numbers at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai exceed 400,000 yesterday on the world event’s 68th day. Action Star Jackie Chan is the voice behind the event’s theme song (posted above.)

The World Exposition runs May 1 through Oct. 31, 2010, and is expected to be China’s biggest event since the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

China in 2002 won the bid for the World Exposition in 2010, marking the first registered World Exposition in a developing country.

Since 1951, when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Exposition has attained increasing prominence as a grand event for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges.

A total of 189 countries are presenting their best at the six-month event, which is expected to attract 70 million visitors from China and abroad and likely to be the largest World Expo ever, according to event news.

The Danes are presenting their “Little Mermaid” statue. The French are displaying seven national treasures, including works by Edouard Manet and Vincent van Gogh, while Canada’s Cirque du Soleil is giving dazzling performances.

With the world still overshadowed by the financial crisis, analysts believe the Expo will be a boost not only to the Chinese economy, but also the global economic recovery.

As the world’s third largest economy and the first country emerging from the global financial crisis, China is becoming more attractive to global business with a market of 1.3 billion population.

The event also serves as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging innovative ideas, demonstrating esprit de corps and looking to the future.
