Three-way partnership creates 15 $1,000 individual awards to encourage students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to study abroad

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, a leading provider of education abroad programs for college-level students in destinations across the globe, and the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education have donated $15,000 to Diversity Abroad to support scholarships for underrepresented students who want to study abroad.

“Our organization is always searching for ways to increase study abroad opportunities for non-traditional, racially diverse, economically disadvantaged and first-generation students so they might also benefit from the powerful effects of international education,” said Cynthia Banks, founder and executive director of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and its AustraLearn, AsiaLearn and EuroLearn programs. “We are thrilled to bring together the Foundation for Asia Pacific Education’s fundraising expertise with Diversity Abroad’s outreach and programming capabilities to set up this new scholarship resource for North American college students.”

Minority students made up just 18% of the 262,416 U.S. students who studied abroad in 2007-2008, according to the latest report from the Institute of International Education. The figure doesn’t take into account other underrepresented populations in study abroad, such as low-income, first-generation, non-traditional and disabled college students.

Founded in 2006, Diversity Abroad is a leading international education portal working to boost participation in international education by students who traditionally have not taken advantage of such opportunities.

“At a time when international competency is more important than ever, underserved students, many times because of financial constraints, have not had equal access to international education opportunities,” said Andrew Gordon, Diversity Abroad president. “Scholarship opportunities like the Diversity Abroad/GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Scholarship open doors for underserved students to take advantage of the benefits afforded through study abroad, which ultimately prepares them to be globally competitive.”

Undergraduate students from any community or four-year college who plan to study abroad in the Asia Pacific region during the summer, fall or spring, and meet eligibility, are invited to apply for the Diversity Abroad/GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Scholarship, which specifically targets students who identify as one of the following: ethnic minority, economically disadvantaged, physically disabled, or first-generation college student.

The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization raising funds to assist students in gaining cultural and academic experiences in the Asia Pacific region, awarded 66 scholarships over the last four awards periods to students from one or more underrepresented categories.

“The Foundation for Asia Pacific Education is pleased to be assisting more students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to study abroad, but we have a lot more work to do,” said Executive Director Karen Brockwell. “This partnership with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and Diversity Abroad deepens our impact and is an example of what organizations can accomplish when they provide financial and outreach support toward the common goal of increasing the participation of these students in international education.”
