The prime minister of Ireland and other Irish dignitaries recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for the launch of a new program to draw more Americans of Irish descent to the country for a world-class, career-focused higher education and immersive cultural experience.

The Ireland Homecoming Study Program, or IHSP, is an initiative of the Institutes of Technology Ireland, an alliance of Irish colleges of higher learning.

The program “aims to make it possible for more U.S. students to take advantage of the high-quality educational experience in a leading EU member state while tapping into their Irish heritage,” said Brian McNamara, IHSP creator, in a statement.

Michael Creech, Regional Director for the AustraLearn / AsiaLearn / EuroLearn study abroad programs of GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, attended the March 16 launch event hosted by Enterprise Ireland. It was one of several events associated with a trade and investment mission to the United States by Ireland’s prime minister, Brian Cowen.

“It was an honor to meet the Prime Minister of Ireland and quite an impressive show of support for the growth of international education in Ireland,” Creech said. “The value and reputation of the Institutes of Technology was demonstrated simply by the Prime Minister’s support and attendance at the launch of the event.”

The IHSP program will provide a strongly reduced tuition cost for students who prove their ancestry. It also will have degree-seeking students as a primary focus.

The EuroLearn study abroad program is a partner with two of the Institutes of Ireland – Institute of Technology Carlow and the Dublin Institute of Technology – and will administer the IHSP scholarship to recipients attending these institutions.

“Institute of Technology degrees are fully transferrable and students emerge equipped with the professional skills needed to quickly embark on productive career paths back home in the United States,” IHSP’s McNamara said. “The return on our investment is a new crop of goodwill ambassadors that promote Irish culture and commerce worldwide. It’s a win-win opportunity for ambitious U.S. students and for Ireland.”
