AsiaLearn Student Video Blogger Describes New, Old Thai Culture
Elmhurst College‘s Emily Nagle, a blogger for AsiaLearn who is studying abroad in Thailand at Mahidol University, describes in her latest video post how everything in Thailand feels like a cultural event.
“There’s a really big difference between old and new in Thailand,” Nagle says. “They have really old traditions on display, but the younger generations at the same time are becoming more modern and involving themselves in activities you’d see in the West.”
Nagle includes in her post (above) some footage of a student dance performance by one of the clubs at her university.
“It was really cool to see what the youth is really about,” she says, “because it’s not what you see in the brochures.”
Europe
EuroScholar’s Star Research Presented At Conference
Jennifer Bean, a EuroScholars alumna who did research on stars while studying at Leiden University in the fall of 2009, presented her findings at the 3rd Annual Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics in late January at Ohio State University.
Bean, a student at Missouri State University, conducted research for Simon Portegies-Zwart and Anthony Brown while at Leiden University. The research was a continuation of Simon’s paper “The Lost Siblings of the Sun,” which explored how the sun was created in an embedded cluster with a number of other stars.
To expand on that research, Bean used simulations created by Dr. Brown to search out possible candidates of these other stars in the Hipparcos catalogue. The simulated data served as selection criteria for the stars in Hipparcos catalog.
An overview of Bean’s research and presentation can be found on page 13 of the Conference program.
