Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin Engineering Students Design, Build Refugee Shelters

Trinity College Dublin Engineering Students Shelter Building Contest

Engineering students at Trinity College Dublin competed in December to build inexpensive but innovative emergency shelters as part of their coursework.

For an emergency shelter, it was a tall order.

As part of their coursework, engineering students at Trinity College Dublin in December had to design a shelter for an extreme climate. It also had to be light weight, portable, easy to put up and take down, incorporate a place to store food, a solar cooker and a solar still for water purification, and be equipped to collect 70 liters of clean rain water a week.

But the challenge didn’t end there. The shelter had to adhere to all requirements with a maximum cost of – whoa! – just €100.

In addition, students were scored on the level of sustainability of sourced materials, the potential for shelter recycling and re-use, and the carbon footprint involved.

The students then built the shelters on campus in the Physics Garden, with guest judges from Focus Ireland and UNICEF.

First prize went to The Arc for best overall shelter. Special mention was given to Refshelter for excellent construction and Cardboard Cradle for innovative construction technique.

Trinity College Dublin is the oldest and most prestigious university in Ireland, and one of the older universities in Western Europe. Recently, it was ranked in the top 100 universities by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
