Edith Cowan University Students Win Prestigious International Journalism Awards

Journalism programs are widely available for international students in Australia and New Zealand.

Journalism students at Edith Cowan University, a university in Perth, Australia, have been recognized with five awards to place second overall in a 2009 international student journalism competition.

For journalism, advertising and communications students considering studying abroad, Australia and New Zealand offer many top-flight program opportunities.

“Our programs are small and we were competing against the top universities in Australia and the Pacific,” said Trevor Cullen, ECU’s journalism course coordinator and an associate professor, in a university news article. “To win five awards and come second overall is a great boost to the growing national reputation of ECU’s broadcast and journalism programs.”

The 2009 OSSIE Awards recognize top journalism students from the 29 universities in Australia that offer journalism programs and are open to tertiary student journalists from New Zealand universities as well.

Awards to ECU undergraduates and postgraduates included:

  • Best Radio News Story by an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Student
  • Best TV Current Affairs Story by an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Student
  • Best Broadcast Current Affairs story by a Postgraduate Student.

ECU’s online newspaper for undergraduate students, 3rd Degree, received High Commendation in the Best Regular Student Publication category.

The awards were presented in December as part of the Journalism Education Association of Australia’s annual conference at Burswood.
