AustraLearn’s Tropical Marine Ecology Program Featured on “Totally Wild” Kids’ Adventure Program
Queensland’s Heron Island Teaches Lessons In Global Warming
“Totally Wild ” the award-winning Australian magazine-style program aimed at children ages 8-14, brought its cameras, crew and host “Pip” earlier this year to AustraLearn’s Tropical Marine Ecology Program.
The Ten Network show visited the four-week marine program in early June during the portion focusing on Heron Island Research Station. The show talked to students and interviewed Dr. Glen Burns, an Australia native who has led the course for eight years and currently lives in Florida.
The episode including the “Fish Research” segment aired earlier this week, and may eventually be posted online.
During “Totally Wild’s” visit, Burns was teaching the May 2009 group of AustraLearn students about tropical marine ecosystems and the interactions of humans with these systems. As part of the course, students have many opportunities for hands-on research, as well as snorkeling, scuba diving, reef walking, wildlife observation, nature photography and hiking.”

Students in the AustraLearn's Tropical Marine Ecology Program study the environment around Heron Island in Queensland, Australia.
The Heron Island Research Station is a world-class research and teaching facility and the most productive and prestigious marine research station in Australia. Established more than 50 years ago, the station is an internationally renowned facility for coral reef research and student training in marine sciences. The island is an important site for the long-term collection of baseline oceanographic data on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
